Single-Minded Conference 2011 from Calvary Leatherhead on Vimeo.

Oh no!! A singles conference? That’s the last place I want to go. These are like a Christian version of speed dating where they quote Scriptures to each other like Ecclesiastes 4:11 “If two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone?”. They come up with holy pick up lines like, “let’s hold hands and pray”. Of course there is my personal favourite, “God told me that we are supposed to be together.”

No wonder many singles are turned off by the concept of a singles conference. Rest assured, the focus and purpose of this conference is not about “getting unsingle”. The purpose is about glorifying God in singleness. Some of you will get married, and some may not, but the fact that you are single right now means that this is something for you, hence the name of the conference: Single-Minded: Singles acting on the grace of God.

Christians who are single are in a great position to focus on Jesus, but often there is the temptation of double vision, trying to keep one eye on Jesus and the other eye on the ‘options’. Your singleness of heart must guard your singleness of status. 1 Peter 1:13 calls Christians to have their minds prepared for action with our hope in the grace of God which we understand more clearly as Jesus is revealed to us. In other words, the more you focus on Christ, the more you know the grace he has given you. This grace empowers you to live the life that is in front of you under the shadow of the Cross. This grace brings contentment, as the Apostle Paul said, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11).

This conference is to encourage you in your pursuit of Christ, using your single status for the glory of God, and to remind you that you are part of a larger group of people who share the same present calling. Your singleness may just be a season, but we want to see that season’s fruitfulness for Christ maximized!
